Gobi Desert Travel Guide: What to Expect and How to Plan Your Trip

Published November 2025 · By Explore Gobi

The Gobi Desert is one of the world's great wilderness destinations — vast, dramatic, and surprisingly varied. It is not the rolling sea of sand dunes that many imagine (though those exist too), but a mosaic of rocky plains, dramatic cliffs, hidden canyons, and yes, some of the most spectacular sand dunes on earth.

Getting there is straightforward. MIAT Mongolian Airlines operates daily flights from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad (the gateway city to the Gobi) in about 2 hours. Alternatively, a shared minivan from the Dragon Bus Station in UB takes around 9–10 hours and costs approximately ₮70,000. We also offer private transfers.

The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn — May to September. The weather is warm and dry, the skies are clear, and the landscape is at its most photogenic. Summer (July–August) can be hot in the middle of the day, but mornings and evenings are perfect for exploring.

Packing for the Gobi requires layers. Even in summer, temperatures drop significantly at night. Bring a windproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a headlamp. A power bank is essential as electricity can be intermittent in the desert.

For accommodation, our family ger guesthouses offer the most authentic experience. They are comfortable, clean, and equipped with proper beds and bedding. All meals are home-cooked by our family.
